How-To: Add Color to Wall Art & Photography (Part II)

This is a quick, easy project – my favorite kind 🙂 – to add some color to wall art and/or photography. It’s removable and changeable for the commitment-phobic like myself.

Materials:

• Frame with mat
• Large sheet of colored paper*
• Pencil
• Scissors
• Painter’s tape

*I like Canson Mi-Teintes drawing papers (available at arts/crafts stores like Michael’s, Binders, Hobby Lobby, etc). Cardstock is too thick to use for this project. Believe me: I tried and got so frustrated the cardstock and the frame almost got thrown out on the front lawn. That’ll show ’em…

This might seem like a lot of steps, but I promise, it’s really not! I just wanted to make sure to photograph all the steps.

• Disassemble the frame, and center the mat face down on the colored paper.

• Trace around the inside of the mat.
• Draw a diagonal line from each corner (X-shape, doesn’t have to be perfect).

• Set mat aside, and cut along diagonal lines to form 4 triangles. I usually stick 1 end of the scissors through the intersection of the lines, and cut from there.
• Replace mat, using the traced outline as a guide.
• Fold back triangles, and tape as shown, trimming if necessary.

• Fold and tape 2 of the 4 sides.

• Fold each corner up to the mat.

• Unfold corners, and cut along the indentions.

• Fold remaining 2 sides, and tape to mat.

• Reassemble frame, and voila!
